Film in Frankfurt

 

Frankfurt has a vibrant film culture with a broad variety of institutions and events.

The foundation of municipally funded film theatres all over Germany was initiated in Frankfurt am Main, when, in the winter of 1971, the Kommunales Kino (now called Kino im Deutschen Filmmuseum) took up a regular screening schedule. The Hessische Filmförderung [Hessian Film Fund] is based in Frankfurt.

Directors as diverse as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Sönke Wortmann and Rolf Silber made some of their greatest films here.

The Deutsches Filmmuseum Frankfurt [German Film Museum Frankfurt] was founded in 1984 as the first museum of its kind in Germany. The Deutsches Filminstitut – DIF [German Film Institute], one of the oldest and most renowned film archives in Germany, also has its Headquarters in Frankfurt.

The Städelschule in Frankfurt and the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach train filmmakers who can specialise in different disciplines and genres. The Filmhaus Frankfurt acts as the local filmmakers’ lobby. Seminars and training courses as well as industry events promote, support and help connect the local film scene.

Frankfurt hosts several internationally acclaimed film festivals, such as “Nippon Connection” and the „Internationales Kinderfilmfestival LUCAS” [LUCAS International Children’s Film Festival].
